Getting out of the house for your newborn’s first pediatrician appointment can feel like a big undertaking!
Here are some tips to make it a little easier:
Be prepared with:
✅ Approximate number of feeds per day and approximate number of wet and dirty diapers per day, since you’ll probably be asked.
While not necessary, baby tracking apps make this really easy!
✅ Any questions or concerns you have!
Your pediatrician has probably seen and heard it all before, and should be happy to help.
Bring with you:
✅ Outfit for baby that’s easy to take on and off, since you’ll have to undress them down to their diaper (and a change of clothes for them too, just in case!)
✅ Diaper bag - they’ll need to be in a clean, dry diaper, and the pediatrician’s office most likely won’t have free diapers and wipes like at the hospital
✅ Blanket - not necessary, but nice to have for keeping baby warm while they’re undressed waiting for the doctor!
✅ Pacifier - a great way to soothe them if they take one!
✅ Bottles, nursing cover, or anything else you might need in case they get hungry
And a bonus tip:
✅ Plan to arrive 15-30 minutes before your actual appointment. Getting out of the house with a baby (or any kid!) always takes a lot longer than planned! This allows for any last minute blowouts or spit-up mishaps.
Getting out of the house for the first time with a newborn is a huge milestone! You should be proud of yourself!
