First time traveling while pumping? That first trip can be so exciting, but also overwhelming!
The good news is: You can do it, and it will only get easier!
Here is everything you need to know about traveling with a baby, and pumping and bringing milk on the go.
(And even if you're traveling without your baby for work or fun, these same guidelines apply!)
Bringing breast milk or formula bottles on the plane
š¼ For trips within the US, you can bring as much milk (and as many frozen ice packs) as you need (even without your baby), but TSA may test it if itās over 3.4oz or 100mL, so just factor in a little extra time for that.
š¼ You can ask the TSA agent to change their gloves before testing if youād like.Ā
š¼ TSA does not need to test milk if itās frozen.Ā
Here are the official TSA guidelines on traveling with breast milk. If you have any questions, you can also chat with TSA by texting "Travel" to AskTSA (275-872). Be sure to take a screenprint of the guidelines for reference at the airport if needed!
Private spaces for pumping or breastfeeding at the airport
š¼ Check out theĀ Mamava app to find places to pump in the airport if you prefer to have a private space. Airports have motherās rooms and/or lactation pods you can use. Most have a chair and table, and some have a sink and even a diaper changing station!
Taking your breast pump on the plane
š¼ Your milk and pump do not count toward your carry-on bag allowance on most airlines, so you can take them in addition to anything else you have.
š¼ You can always check your airline's website or reach out to them ahead of time for confirmation if you'd like. While most airlines are familiar with the rules, it can never hurt to be prepared with a screenprint of their guidelines!
Pumping and storing milk at a hotel
š¼ If youāre able to stay at an extended stay hotel (like a Residence Inn or Homewood Suites) with a dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer, that makes things easier!Ā
š¼ If you wonāt have a freezer in your room at the hotel, you can bring bags and permanent markers to label with your name, room number and phone number or email, and you can usually ask the front desk to freeze milk or ice packs for you. You can always call ahead to be sure, or to ask if itās possible to have a freezer in your room.Ā
š¼ Hotel mini fridges arenāt always as cold as regular fridges so just be aware of that too!Ā
